Ice on fire! Athletes compete in dragon boat race on frozen river in Fushun

"Athletes raced across a frozen river in northeastern China on Saturday as dragon boat racing moved onto the ice. Footage captured in Fushun on Saturday shows teams racing boats with sled runners attached across the ice, while spectators watch and enjoy local food. Unlike water-based racing, ice dragon boating relies on upper-body strength, the participants shared. "The main difference compared to racing on water is how slippery the ice is, which tests the team’s coordination even more," a competitor explained. "Ice dragon boating is more like alpine skiing; it requires thrust from the rear, putting the power behind you. This demands a collective effort, true unity and cooperation. It’s all about teamwork," added a second. The competition is part of the 2025-2026 Ice Dragon Boat Super League, held across several cities in Northeast China. Officials reported that the event drew over 3,000 spectators this weekend alone. Organisers say the league is part of 'sports plus tourism' events aimed at boosting local economies and drawing tourists throughout the season."
