Heatwave? No sweat - Frozen treats help soo animals beat extreme heat in Rio de Janeiro

"Animals at Rio de Janeiro’s BioPark enjoyed frozen treats made of fruit and ground meat on Tuesday to mitigate the intense heat affecting the city, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C in some areas. Footage shows a group of primates receiving ice pops, while tourists and visitors took the opportunity to photograph the moment. "Those activities are environmental enrichment; they are part of our welfare program for animals, and the goal is to stimulate natural behaviours and routine. Today's ice cream activity aims to help with the heat. The primates interact very well and are so fun to watch," said biologist Leticia Feitosa. She added that this activity is part of the animal welfare program, due to climate change, which is a topic of concern for some species. One of the most notable moments was at the spider monkey enclosure, where the animals enthusiastically interacted with the frozen treats, climbing, exploring, and sharing pieces, encouraging movement and social behaviour. A jaguar also received a specially prepared ice enrichment that combined refreshing elements with sensory stimulation. In the first days of 2026, Rio de Janeiro reached temperatures of up to 40°C. On Monday, the highest temperature in the Santa Cruz area reached 41 °C, making it one of the hottest areas in Brazil."
