Carney in India - PM touches down in Mumbai as Canada attempts to continue 'thaw' in ties after 2023 diplomatic disaster

"Canadian PM Mark Carney touched down in Mumbai on Friday, at the start of his first official visit to India. Footage shows him walking down the aircraft steps. He is set to meet with business leaders and begin talks on a comprehensive trade deal. Relations between the countries hit rock bottom in 2023 when Carney's predecessor Justin Trudeau accused New Delhi of being behind the killing of a Sikh separatist - which India strongly denied. Earlier this week, the Canadian side said that "we’re confident that that activity is not continuing or we would not be having this type of discussion." Carney is set to meet PM Narendra Modi on March 2. They last met at the G7 in Alberta last year, and held talks on the sidelines in an attempt to rebuild ties. The Canadian PM is on a four-day visit. He is reportedly attempting a pivot away from the US - like a number of other European leaders - and towards the Global South following trade and tariff wars with President Donald Trump."
