'Always in our minds and hearts' - Johannesburg Muslims end holy month with prayers, paying respects to deceased loved ones

"Johannesburg's Islamic community gathered for prayers at the Bosmont Masjid on Saturday as well as paid their respects to deceased loved ones at Avalon Cemetery to mark Eid al-Fitr, signalling the end of the holy month of Ramadan. Footage shows rows of vehicles surrounding the mosque and crowds assembling for morning prayers, followed by scenes of worshippers embracing and greeting each other. "How we generally celebrate Eid is we come to the mosque… perform the salaah, and then on our way home, we greet everybody. We tend to spend Eid together as a family," Fatima Fakier, a worshipper, said. "In our prayers are always the Muslims who are suffering around the world… even though today is a day of celebration, they are always there in our minds, in our hearts," she continued. Imaam Hendricks, a worshipper, said the moment carried both celebration and concern. "We are very angry at this situation where our brothers are being killed… we make dua that Allah gives relief for the Muslims in Palestine and all these parts of the world," he remarked. Eid al-Fitr occurs on the first day of the tenth month of Shawwal in the Islamic lunar calendar, beginning with the sighting of the crescent moon and marking the conclusion of Ramadan."
