"Social organisations in El Salvador held a caravan to the Cuban Embassy in San Salvador on Saturday to show support for the island as the tough US blockade adds pressure on Havana. Footage filmed on Saturday shows members of civil society groups waving Cuban and Salvadoran flags and chanting slogans in support of Cuba's resistance. The protest came as Washington steps up measures aimed at restricting fuel supplies to Cuba and limiting its energy ties with third countries, worsening long-running problems such as power cuts and transport shortages. "In Cuba there is the 'Nuestra America' convoy, which brings together participants from more than 100 countries, showing their solidarity and rejection of the inhumane policy of the United States government towards Cuba, which is no longer just a blockade, it is an act of genocide that seeks to suffocate Cuba through hunger and deprivation," said Tomas Lorenzo Gomez, Cuban Ambassador to El Salvador. Participants also pointed to Cuba's long-standing support for El Salvador in healthcare and education as a reason for backing the solidarity campaign. "How many Salvadorans have been able to complete their medical studies thanks to the efforts of the Cuban people? How many Salvadorans have regained their sight thanks to the effort and sacrifice of the brotherly Cuban people?" said Miguel Escobar, Secretary General of the Unitary Trade Union Federation of El Salvador. Organisers said the actions are part of a wider campaign that has already helped send humanitarian aid from El Salvador to Cuba in co-ordination with international initiatives. The caravan adds to similar support across Latin America, as social groups denounce the humanitarian impact of sanctions and call for closer co-operation among Global South countries under external pressure."
