'We cannot live without tundra!' - Thousands celebrate Reindeer Herder's Day in northern Russia

"Reindeer Herder’s Day was celebrated in several towns across the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug in Russia's North on Saturday. Footage captured in Salekhard shows participants racing across a snow-covered field on sledges. In Gubkinsky town, locals can be seen taking part in wrestling and rope-throwing competitions (northern sport linked to reindeer hunting). "We cannot live without the tundra: without the forest, without the reindeer. It's as though we live in harmony with nature, rather than amidst the hustle and bustle of city life," a reindeer herder from Purivsky district, Sergei Pyak, shared. The festival took place for the first time in the town of Gubkinsky. According to the town council, over 10,000 people attended the event, and 54 sleigh teams took part in the races. Meanwhile, the mayor of Salekhard, Alexei Titovski, said that 50 tundra residents took part in the sleigh races. Reindeer Herder’s Day originated in the 1950s and remains popular among the indigenous peoples of the North."
