'The blockade can be broken' - Fmr UK opposition leader Corbyn rallies international solidarity for Cuba amid Havana visit

"Former opposition leader and member of British Parliament Jeremy Corbyn expressed his opposition to the United States economic blockade against Cuba and criticised the US government's interference in the internal affairs of other countries during his stay in Havana as part of the international Nuestra America convoy in solidarity with the Caribbean island. In an interview on Saturday, the MP explained that the mission's central aim is to highlight the impact of the US actions and demonstrate that it can be challenged through international solidarity. "The blockade can be broken, [...] the effects of the oil embargo, particularly, are devastating on the Cuban economy," Corbyn asserted. Regarding the fuel and energy shortages facing the island, the lawmaker described the deterioration of economic and social conditions in key sectors for the survival of the Cuban population. "Life is very difficult. Refrigerated food goes off. Restaurants can't operate. Factories can't operate, businesses can't operate. This is an attempt to destroy the Cuban economy by the USA," he stated. The British lawmaker questioned US interference in Latin American affairs, defending each nation's right to govern itself. "It's not legal in any way for a government to declare that anything that happens in the Western Hemisphere is the business of the government of the United States. It's not. The US is one government in one country. What Canada does, what Mexico does, what Brazil does is the business of those governments," Corbyn emphasised. Corbyn rejected any military intervention on the island, saying the Cuban people were 'too strong' to let the invasion happen. "All that Trump can do is bomb from 35,000 feet (10,668 kilometres) and tell social media that he's winning. He's not. He's lost every moral argument there is around the world. He's lost every legal argument there is around the world." Nuestra America convoy is an international solidarity mission bringing together participants from more than 30 countries to deliver food, medicine and essential supplies to Cuba in defiance of a US blockade that has recently intensified amid diplomatic tensions between the two nations."
