PPP opposes Farmers’ Alliance demand for new canals

LAHORE: Pakistan Peoples Party leadership has voiced strong opposition to the Kissan Ittehad’s recent demand for the construction of new canals in the Punjab province, warning of serious consequences for the agricultural sector. PPP Central Punjab Secretary Information, Shahzad Saeed Cheema, in a statement issued on Friday, criticized the proposal, terming it “agricultural suicide” if implemented within the existing irrigation framework. He alleged that proponents of the plan were attempting to create instability in the country once again. While acknowledging the significance of food security, he stressed that such concerns should not be allowed to fuel division or conflict. Cheema further cautioned that the issue could escalate into a major challenge for the Punjab government if not addressed carefully. Extending an olive branch, he invited the Kissan Ittehad leadership for dialogue at the PPP’s provincial office and said the party was open to convening an all-parties conference to deliberate on the matter.
