IG orders to intensify crackdown against drug dealers, smugglers

LAHORE: Following the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s “Drug-Free Punjab” vision, vigorous and effective anti-narcotics operations are underway across the province. Inspector General of Police Punjab Abdul Kareem has issued directives to further intensify the crackdown against major drug dealers and smugglers. Punjab Police spokesperson said that so far this year, more than 11,000 drug peddlers have been arrested across the province, while 10,975 cases have been registered. During these operations, over 6,000 kilograms of charas, more than 706 kilograms of heroin, 308 kilograms of ice (crystal meth), 151 kilograms of opium, and over 179,000 liters of liquor have been recovered from drug dealers. In the provincial capital Lahore as well, effective actions have been carried out against narcotics. During the current year, 1,148 drug peddlers were arrested while 1,145 cases were registered. Recoveries in Lahore included 376 kilograms of charas, 20 kilograms of heroin, 75 kilograms of ice, 4 kilograms of opium, and 8,260 liters of liquor. IG Punjab Abdul Kareem directed that all individuals involved in the drug supply chain be brought to justice and awarded strict punishments under the law. He further emphasised accelerating actions against those involved in drug peddling in and around educational institutions and hostels, as well as taking strict action against elements engaged in the online sale and purchase of narcotics.
