"High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas said that Cuba's economic crisis reached a 'breaking point' during a press conference with the Mexican Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Roberto Velasco, in Mexico City on Thursday. "Cuba's economic crisis is really reaching a breaking point. The Cuban people deserve opportunities and freedom, not more control and isolation," she said. However, she also criticised the island's government over alleged 'mismanagement and political repression'. For his part, the Mexican foreign minister reiterated that Mexico's stance is the self-determination of peoples and the peaceful resolution of international conflicts, reaffirming Mexico's support for the Caribbean nation. "Today we have agreed on the importance of maintaining humanitarian cooperation that allows the Cuban people to have access to basic services, which of course allows them to have a dignified life as all people deserve," Velasco said. US President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on countries supplying oil to Cuba this year, with blackouts and power outages seen. Former Cuban president Raul Castro was indicted by the US Department of Justice on alleged 'murder' charges on Wednesday, which the Cuban administration strongly rejected. The statement come as Kallas alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa attended the VIII Mexico-European Union Summit, marking the first high-level summit between the bloc and Mexico in 11 years."
