'Historic opportunity in security' - Iran says it will co-manage new maritime zone in Hormuz with Oman

"Hormozgan Governor Mohammad Ashuri announced during a press conference in Bandar Abbas on Friday that Iran plans to co-manage a new 'joint maritime zone with Oman.' "The new zone announced by the Islamic Republic of Iran is essentially a geographical area where Iran and Oman will jointly enforce their respective rights and levy tariffs in the future," the governor declared. "We will respond decisively to anyone who disrupts this area, and there is no cause for concern on that front," he continued. Footage shows the press conference attended by Iranian officials, along with additional shots of ships anchored in the Strait of Hormuz. Ashuri described the plan as ashared economic and legal arrangement, calling it a 'public entitlement' for both countries. "Our geopolitical advantage lies in turning this so‑called 'geopolitical advantage' into a historic opportunity in security, economic and other areas, while respecting the rights of neighboring countries," he added. On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baqaei said that Iran "continues to coordinate with Oman and other relevant parties to develop a mechanism governing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz," adding that both sides held a meeting in Muscat last week to follow up on the issue. President Donald Trump told reporters on Thursday that Washington is 'studying the matter,' while stressing that the United States wants the international waterway to remain 'free' and that 'no fees should be imposed.' He also asserted 'full control over the Strait of Hormuz,' claiming the US naval blockade on Iranian ports is "100% effective. No one could break through. It's like a steel wall.""
