MANILA, Philippines – The state-run weather agency said Sunday that it is closely monitoring the movement of a low-pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). Weather specialist Veronica Torres of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in a 5 a.m. briefing that the weather disturbance, estimated at 2,195 kilometers east of southern Mindanao, would not be a threat to any part of the archipelago in the next 24 to 48 hours. However, its trough or extension has already been affecting Mindanao, Palawan, Eastern Samar, and Southern Leyte, bringing cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, she said. “Flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains would be even possible in these areas due to the trough of the LPA,” the Pagasa forecaster added. Meanwhile, another weather system, the easterlies – winds that carry warm and humid weather – would be experienced over Bicol Region and Quezon province, bringing partly cloudy to overcast skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms possibly within 24 hours, Pagasa said. Metro Manila and the rest of the country would be experiencing a similar weather pattern due to localized thunderstorms, Torres said.
