"Thousands of people took part tonight in “Obelisk Night,” a massive event held in downtown Buenos Aires to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the city’s most emblematic monument. Footage filmed on Saturday shows a 3D mapping show projected directly onto the Obelisk, revisiting the monument’s history and iconic moments in the city. The projection was one of the most anticipated moments of the night and was accompanied by the Mahler Orchestra. Starting at 7 p.m., Corrientes Avenue was transformed into a huge pedestrian corridor featuring live music, artistic performances, gastronomy and visual shows around the iconic monument. Analia, one of the attendees, said the Obelisk represents unity and a gathering place for all Argentines. “Here we gather to celebrate, to cry, to shout. This Obelisk is magnificent. We gather here for everything,” she said. “It is the place for celebrations, but also the place where people gather when there is a protest (...) So there is probably nothing more iconic than that in the city,” said Luis, another attendee. The event also included free guided tours inside the Obelisk and raffles for access to the observation deck. According to authorities, the celebrations will continue until 2 a.m. local time, and a large number of attendees is expected throughout the night. The Obelisk was inaugurated on May 23, 1936, as a tribute to the fourth centenary of the first founding of Buenos Aires and, over the decades, became the most representative symbol of the Argentine capital."
