Crossing under watch - Uganda ramps up health screenings at Kasindi-Karambi border amid Ebola outbreak

"Uganda has introduced new restrictions on movement across its border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as authorities step up containment measures in response to the Ebola outbreak. Footage captured at the Kasindi–Karambi border crossing on Sunday shows health workers checking travellers' temperatures and supervising handwashing stations, while border patrol officers monitor the flow of people and goods through the crossing. "We are raising awareness among the local community about respecting preventative measures to combat Ebola virus disease," said Nadine Kaleye, a National Border Hygiene Program (PNHF) agent. The new measures include tighter screening procedures, increased health checks at crossing points and the suspension of passenger transport in some areas. "Handwashing is mandatory, and we take temperatures every time someone passes through here," she added. "If we suspect a case of Ebola, we immediately alert higher authorities and isolate the individual." The outbreak was declared in northeastern DRC's Ituri province, near the Ugandan border, earlier this month. DRC officials reported that so far, there have been at least 177 suspected Ebola-related deaths and more than 750 suspected cases across the region. The strain of Ebola, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, currently has no vaccines, which the World Health Organisation recently declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, while raising the national risk assessment for the DRC to 'very high'."
