'You need armed forces to defend yourself' - German DefMin Pistorius justifies increased military spending, citing threats from Russia and beyond

"German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius justified the country's push to increase military readiness, citing rising global conflicts and the need for deterrence at Armed Forces Day in Neubiberg on Saturday. "The word 'war-capable' is not meant to imply that we want to wage war, let alone a war of aggression," Pistorius said. "You need armed forces to be able to defend yourself." Footage shows people surrounding various German military artillery and aircraft as the Bundeswehr University Munich opened its doors to the public. Pistorius stated that he understood critics' apprehension about conscription and increased defence spending. "This world is different from the one it was five or even 20 years ago, or 16 years ago, when conscription was suspended. And we have to face this reality," he added. The Defence minister remarked that Germany needed to maintain a stable presence amid growing global instability, citing Russia's ongoing actions in Ukraine and the crisis in the Middle East. "The preparation of possible multinational missions to protect maritime trade routes in the Mediterranean is also part of it, or a soon-to-be-deployed air defence task force in Turkey to protect NATO alliance territory," he persisted. Germany has been gradually increasing defence spending in recent years, driven by NATO's two percent GDP target and growing concerns about security in Europe following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. Conscription was suspended in 2011 but has returned to political debate as Berlin seeks to expand the Bundeswehr's size and readiness."
