Making the grade - Maotanchang residents line streets in massive send-off for students ahead of China's 'hardest' exam

"An annual send-off ceremony for students preparing for China’s national college entrance examination, the Gaokao, was held on Thursday at Maotanchang Middle School in Liu’an, east China’s Anhui Province, drawing large crowds of parents and residents. Footage shows parents and locals cheering as shuttle buses carrying exam candidates depart. Maotanchang Middle School is also seen later in the footage. "I'm incredibly excited and so happy for the kids. Every year, the students who stay with our family while preparing for their exams achieve outstanding results," said Wang, a local resident. Another local, Xia, whose son took the Gaokao in 2018, recalled the experience, saying, "Whenever I think back on that time, the atmosphere here today feels exactly the same as when I accompanied my son to take the Gaokao. The emotions are identical. I feel incredibly excited." Maotanchang Middle School is famous as the ultimate 'Gaokao factory,' and is home to tens of thousands of students who prepare for the exam and is one of the most well-known schools in China. The town's annual send-off ceremony draws wide attention as millions of students prepare for one of the most important exams of their academic lives. According to reports, 12.9 million candidates have registered for the 2026 national college entrance examination. The 2026 Gaokao is scheduled to take place from June 7-9 in most provincial-level regions, while in some areas it will last three or four days."
