"The biotechnology engineer Berenice Lizarraga, promoter of the environmental project "Isla Basura," was selected to represent Mexico at the World Summit on Leadership and Innovation in the United States, where she will present an ecological restoration model developed in the coastal city of Mazatlan. Images recorded this Saturday in Mazatlan show the islet where the project was born. It consists of two hectares located in the Urias estuary, an area that for years accumulated large amounts of solid waste that were dragged from urban and industrial areas and have generated layers of garbage on the surface. "The truth is that I had seen many polluted places in Mazatlan due to the time I have been doing activism, but when I got here it was a surprise. I felt like I was in a horror movie," said Berenice Lizarraga. As a result, the activist and the civil association Viva la Ola promoted a permanent program of cleaning, environmental restoration, and ecological education in which local volunteers participate. The goal is for local fauna to return to the island. "The pollution of this Isla Basura site is only a reflection of the poor waste management we have in the city and in many parts of our country," she stated. Her request to the authorities is to propose "circular economy projects" to valorize waste and involve communities. According to Nitzia Pineda, co-founder of the Isla Basura project, thanks to the sanitation days, four tons of waste have been removed, including PET, polyurethane, polystyrene, and glass. This has allowed the return of local birds. "I would ask for better enforcement of regulations on the use of single-use plastics, as well as the places where they are disposed of at the end," mentioned Pineda. The initiative, which emerged in 2024, has led Berenice Lizarraga to present this restoration model abroad, as an example of transformation in polluted regions of Mexico. Her participation in the 2026 World Summit on Leadership and Innovation is part of the international meeting that will bring together young people to present social and environmental initiatives. The event will take place in the United States on August 6 and 7."
