"A large-scale fire destroyed 35 boats in the port of Manta on Saturday, as dozens of ships were dragged to the shore by the tide, prompting a mobilisation by Ecuadorian authorities. Footage shows the fire consuming the boats, while dense columns of smoke spread through the air. Some people can be seen watching the incident from the port's shore, and police officers patrolling. The National Risk Management Secretariat of Ecuador reported that two people were injured and were taken to the Rodriguez Zambrano Hospital. Their health status is still under evaluation. The destroyed vessels included artisanal fishing boats and medium-sized fibreglass craft. The Port Captaincy leads containment manoeuvres and coordinates tugboat support for response efforts, aiming to prevent the fire from spreading to other boats and nearby facilities. The fire broke out following an accident during welding work at the port, according to the Risk Management Secretariat, though the assessment remains ongoing. The National Risk Management Secretariat is working with the Ministry of the Environment to gather technical information to determine possible environmental impacts resulting from the fire and the materials involved in the incident."
