‘Alarming coastal heatwave’ forecast for Karachi

KARACHI: The metropolis is likely to face a coastal heatwave over the coming days, with temperatures expected to rise to 42 degree Celsius while humidity remains above 50 percent, a meteorological official warned on Monday, calling the situation “alarming”. An official of the Pakistan Meteorological Department said that when temperatures cross 40 Celsius and humidity stays at 50 percent or higher, the perceived or “feels like” temperature can rise by eight to ten degrees, significantly increasing health risks. He explained that although Karachi had previously recorded a temperature of 44.1 Celsius, the impact was less severe on that day because humidity was low. This time; however, due to the influence of sea breezes, low humidity cannot be assured, which makes conditions more dangerous. The official said such weather is described as a coastal heatwave, where high humidity combined with extreme heat intensifies discomfort. Reduced wind speed during this period can create suffocation-like conditions, while excessive sweating, a reduced sense of thirst, and rapid dehydration can strongly affect the human body, particularly children, women, senior citizens, and outdoor workers. He advised residents to increase water intake, keep their heads covered, and avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight between 10am and 4pm, unless it is an emergency. Heatwave conditions are also expected to prevail over most parts of Sindh under the influence of a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere, with temperatures likely to remain four to six Celsius above normal until June 12. Several northern and central districts, including Jacobabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Ghotki, Khairpur, Shikarpur and Qambar Shahdadkot, may experience extreme temperatures ranging between 48 and 51 Celsius. Other areas such as Hyderabad, Tharparkar, Badin, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro, Matiari, Sanghar and Umerkot are likely to see temperatures between 42 and 45 Celsius, while Karachi division is expected to record 39 to 42 Celsius during the period. The Met Office cautioned that dust storms may occur at isolated places in plain areas due to intense heating. The general public has been urged to remain cautious, stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and use water judiciously, as electricity demand is also expected to increase during the heatwave. All concerned authorities have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures to prevent any untoward situation. Copyright Business Recorder, 2026
