MANILA, Philippines — The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) issued a yellow alert for the Visayas grid on Tuesday due to the continued unavailability of some its major coal plants, resulting in the grid's inability to cope with the high demand. The transmission company said that the yellow alert would be between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. as peak demand was expected to reach 2,457 megawatts (MW) with available supply only at 2,644 MW. NGCP said that 23 plants were on forced outage while 12 plants were running on derated capacities, which meant 890.3 MW were unavailable to the grid. The affected major coal plants are Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 1 (169 MW), Therma Visayas Inc. Unit 2 (169 MW), and Panay Energy Development Corporation Unit 3 (150 MW). A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement but does not necessarily lead to power interruptions.
