Rotorua police seek clothing link in Melissa Jones death investigation

Police have renewed an appeal for information as investigations into the unexplained death of Rotorua mother Melissa Jones remain ongoing. Jones, 25, was found dead on the shorefront of Lake Rotorua on October 18, 2019, after last being seen in the city on the weekend of October 7–8. She was the mother of two young children. Rotorua area commander Inspector Herby Ngawhika said that, seven years on, police remain committed to establishing what happened, and continued to assess new information that came to light. Investigators have again highlighted clothing believed to have been worn by Jones before her death – black pants, a black mesh top, and a red garment tied around her waist – which have never been recovered. Ngawhika urged anyone who knew the whereabouts of these items to come forward. Melissa Jones pictured wearing the clothing items police are looking for. Following a recent coroner’s case management conference, police confirmed to the coroner and Jones’ family that the investigation remained open. “Any new information that comes to light will continue to be assessed and investigated,” Ngawika said. “Police believe there are people in the community who may hold information that could assist in establishing what happened to Melissa. Police search Lake Rotorua before finding the body of Melissa Jones.
