"The Maritime Police, the Arica Prosecutor's Office, and Customs reported on Monday the historic seizure of around a thousand tons of wood from Bolivia impregnated with more than 100 tons of different types of drugs at the ports of Arica, Valparaiso, and San Antonio. The operation constitutes the largest seizure recorded in Chile under this modality, with 108 tons of illicit substances detected, mainly cocaine hydrochloride and ketamine. Drone images recorded in Arica show piles of wood where the drugs are stacked, with authorities and military personnel gathered. Videos made in Valparaiso show a police dog sniffing boards while agents carry out tasks to identify drugs. The authorities described the method used as "sophisticated," as the illicit substances were incorporated into the structure of the wood, remaining invisible to the naked eye and detectable only through laboratory analysis. Chile's Minister of Public Security, Martin Arrau, emphasized that the operation demonstrates that when the State acts with "determination," it is possible to "protect our borders and strongly confront organized crime." According to reports, the operation deprived organized crime of estimated profits of around 8 billion dollars. The drugs were destined for 14 ports in different countries. The Chilean Government described the procedure as "a historic blow to international maritime drug trafficking.""
