"The streets of Bujumbura came alive with the sound of drums and traditional dances on Friday as the annual Umukozo Festival was celebrated in the city. Footage shows cultural troupes marching through the centre, entertaining passers-by with traditional performances ahead of the festival. The ritual dance of the royal drum is a spectacle that combines powerful, synchronised drumming with dance, poetry, and traditional songs. It is a fundamental part of Burundian heritage and identity - an art passed down through generations. "When we are beating the drum, it brings us joy, and even the audience becomes very happy," said the President of the drummers' club 'Ruciteme Karyenda Culture'. “It’s truly extraordinary to see such a spectacle in our country. It makes us very happy; everyone is watching. It truly represents peace, peace in the name of Jesus Christ," said a spectator, Gaparata. The ritual drumming is performed during important events and is said to awaken the spirits of the ancestors and drive out evil spirits. In 2014, the ritual dance of the royal drum was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The annual festival brings together dance groups, drummers, and cultural associations from across Burundi."
