"Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Kim Jong-un, to uphold regional peace and stability, as they held talks in Pyongyang on Monday. Xi expressed hopes to enhance ties with the DPRK 'in the new era', highlighting, "so as to better benefit the two countries and peoples and make positive contributions to peace, stability, development and prosperity in the region and the world." In return, Kim conveyed his gratitude to Xi for choosing Pyongyang as his first overseas destination of 2026 and praised the nations' long-standing ties. "This visit once again clearly demonstrates that the DPRK and China have always stood on the right side of history - the side of autonomy and justice," Kim noted. "No matter how the international situation may evolve, the time-tested DPRK-China relations remain unbreakable," he underlined. Xi arrived in the DPRK capital earlier on Monday to begin a two-day state visit at the invitation of Kim, marking his first trip to the DPRK in seven years. The Pyongyang summit follows a series of high-level meetings in Beijing, where Xi Jinping hosted back-to-back meetings with US President Donald Trump and Russia's Vladimir Putin in May. On Xi’s arrival, DPRK state media called for a unified opposition to 'hegemonism and power politics' to mark the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.
