Ateneo assures support for families of 2 student-athletes who drowned

MANILA, Philippines — The administration of the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) has assured the families of the two of its men’s basketball players who drowned, of support as it expressed its “profound sadness” over their demise. This, as the university confirmed the passing of Rene Clert Baterbonia, 19; and Divine Adili, 21, both student-athletes of the Ateneo Men's Blue Eagles Basketball Team, in the accident during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora on June 8, 2026. It reiterated that it would be providing support to the families of two student-athletes along with their teammates and members of the Ateneo community affected by the tragedy. Asking the community to keep them in their prayers, the university in a statement said that the entire Ateneo community mourned the loss of Rene and Divine. It also extends its heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, teammates, coaches, and loved ones. The university also asked for privacy and space for all those grieving as they come to terms with this profound loss. “As a community, we mourn with the families and loved ones of Rene and Divine and entrust them to God's loving mercy. We ask for continued prayers for all who are affected by this tragedy,” the university said. Initial reports from the Central Luzon Police Regional Office indicated that the victims were swimming when they were reportedly carried by a strong current into deeper waters. But the police appealed to the public to refrain from speculating on what had actually happened and instead allow authorities to complete the investigation. The university said details regarding the wake and funeral arrangements would be announced once these have been finalized in consultation with their families.
