Lisa Nandy clashed with Clive Lewis on ITV's Peston. Culture secretary Lisa Nandy has accused a fellow Labour MP of “breathtaking arrogance” as the pair clashed over the crunch Makerfield by-election. Clive Lewis said the party was “toxic” in the constituency and only stood a chance of winning because Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham was its candidate. The pair clashed on ITV’s Peston as voters in the seat prepare to go to the polls on June 18. Left-winger Lewis said: “The Labour Party is toxic in Makerfield – that’s the reality.” When he confirmed that he had not visited the seat, Nandy, who is MP for neighbouring Wigan, told him: “You’ve never been. I live there.” Lewis, the MP for Norwich South, hit back: “You’ve seen the [campaign] literature. It is Andy Burnham, it isn’t about the Labour Party because it’s the only way we’re going to win the by-election.” When Nandy said she had lived in the seat for 17 years, Lewis replied: “I’m sure you have. I’ve got eyes, I’ve got ears. I can read, I can listen, I can speak to people.” Nandy said: “You can’t listen if you haven’t been and spoken to anyone.” She added: “We’ve been friends for a long time, but this is precisely what I mean about the country being cut out the conversation. “You don’t know our community, you’ve never been, and there is a breathtaking arrogance to talking about what communities think and feel when you’ve never met a single one of them.” “Have you been [to Makerfield], Clive?” “I’m going up tomorrow” “Come up, I’ll happily take you for a pint” Culture Secretary @lisanandy calls out Clive Lewis’ ‘breathtaking arrogance’ for assuming what voters in Makerfield think #Peston pic.twitter.com/WDTu7R3994 — Peston (@itvpeston) June 8, 2026 Subscribe to Commons People , the podcast that makes politics easy.
