LTFRB orders structural inspections of bus terminals in quake-hit Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has ordered a structural integrity inspection of bus terminals and other land transportation hubs in areas affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao, as authorities move to ensure public safety amid continuing aftershocks. The LTFRB directed its Regional Franchising and Regulatory Offices (RFROs) in the Davao Region and SOCCSKSARGEN to coordinate with local government units and engineering offices, as well as the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), in inspecting transport facilities. LTFRB Chairman Vigor Mendoza II said the inspection covered all bus terminals and public utility vehicle (PUV) stations, including coordination with terminal owners and operators, as part of precautionary measures following the earthquake. “We want to ensure the safety of both the passengers and our partners in the PUV sector through a thorough inspection on the structural integrity of bus terminals and other land transportation hubs,” Mendoza said. He added that the directive came amid warnings from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) of possible aftershocks following the strong tremor, which has left dozens dead and hundreds injured as buildings collapsed in parts of Mindanao, with the epicenter traced to Sarangani. “The earthquake was so strong and with the Phivolcs warning of more aftershocks, we just want to ensure that everybody is safe for worst-case scenarios,” Mendoza said. Mendoza also instructed all RFROs to check the condition of their personnel and ensure their safety, while suspending operations in severely affected areas. “The safety and well-being of our personnel and all our clients are of paramount concern and as such, I have already suspended the operation of our offices especially in severely-affected areas,” he said. He added that regional offices have been tasked to continue monitoring conditions and prepare contingency plans to ensure continuity of operations once conditions stabilize. LTFRB also assigned Engr. Isagani M. Victorio to proceed to affected areas to assist in monitoring and assessment efforts. Mendoza assured personnel of support from the agency as recovery operations continue.
