MANILA, Philippines — It is still not likely that the Philippines would restore its membership in the International Criminal Court (ICC), Malacañang said on Tuesday. This, despite growing calls for the country to rejoin the Rome Statute, the latest being from Mamamayang Liberal party-list Rep. Leila de Lima. De Lima filed House Resolution 1056 which seeks the Philippines’ re-accession to the ICC. She urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., through the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), to initiate the country’s re-admittance to the international tribunal. “The last answer we got regarding that was that we will not return, we will not rejoin the ICC. We have no other comment regarding that,” Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary Claire Castro said in Filipino in a press briefing. Calls for the Philippines to rejoin the ICC resonated anew as Sen. Ronald Dela Rosa continued to hide from authorities after being named an alleged co-perpetrator of former president Rodrigo Duterte. He has since been declared “wanted” by the ICC. Duterte is facing charges for crimes against humanity over his bloody campaign against drugs.
