Sotto: Intelligence report on Senate security threat 'very serious'

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Vicente Sotto III on Tuesday said the National Bureau of Investigation's intelligence report on the "very serious" threat on the Senate security should be taken seriously. "The threat is a clear and present danger. Therefore, serious considerations must be taken," Sotto said in a text message. Pressed whether the supposed threat would involve the military, Sotto said, "Ask [Senator] Erwin [Tulfo]. (I'm merely an) Eavesdropper lang ako." Sen. Panfilo Lacson said, "As per information, though still sketchy and raw, the level of frustration within the armed services has reached up to battalion and regional levels." "They are closely monitoring the developments in the ongoing crisis at the national level brought about by numerous factors, both internal and external," Lacson said in a text message. The senator said the issues that reportedly frustrated some government forces involved the "Senate [power struggle] and Senate and everything else -- flood control [fund] issues, inflation and oil prices, etc." Asked whether upcoming committee hearings should be postponed until the Senate security concerns were addressed, Sotto said, "Depende (It depends)." "Let's wait for the recommendations of those involved in security," Sotto added, referring to the Senate Office of Sergeant-at-Arms.
