Brothers in arms - Xi and Kim honour fallen Chinese soldiers at Pyongyang’s Friendship Tower

"Chinese President Xi Jinping and Kim Jong Un paid tribute at Pyongyang’s China-DPRK Friendship Tower on Tuesday, in a decades-old display of military and political solidarity. Footage shows Xi and his wife, Peng Liyuan, standing beside Kim and his wife, Ri Sol Ju, at the monument. Xi was also seen straightening ribbons on a flower basket before the pair entered the tower. The leaders described their countries’ shared battles during the 1950s as an 'eternal historical memory'. They pledged to protect memorials honouring fallen Chinese troops and pass the tradition of friendship to future generations. The ceremony closed Xi’s two-day state visit to the DPRK, his first trip to the country in seven years. Talks produced commitments to deepen political, economic and cultural cooperation. The visit marked the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. Xi said relations stood at a 'new historical starting point'. The Friendship Tower commemorates the Chinese People’s Volunteers who fought alongside DPRK forces during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. The monument is built from 1,025 granite and marble blocks, symbolising October 25, 1950, when Chinese forces entered the conflict. Its memorial records the names of 308 Chinese troops, including Mao Anying, the eldest son of Mao Zedong, who was killed during the war."
