Emirates signals strong recovery and push for market access expansion

Berlin: Emirates Airline has reaffirmed its resilience and commitment to growth, with its President Tim Clark stating that the airline is set to recover swiftly from recent regional disruptions. Speaking to reporters in Berlin, Clark said Emirates has no plans to scale back operations despite challenges affecting airlines in the Middle East. He warned European carriers seeking to capitalise on the situation to exercise caution. Clark described attempts by some European airlines to take advantage of temporary disruption in the Middle East aviation sector as “a bit sad”, adding: “Beware of what you wish for. We will come back with great strength and speed.” Operations remain strong Airlines in the Middle East have been impacted by airspace closures since the escalation of tensions involving Iran earlier this year, leading to operational adjustments across the region. However, industry executives attending the International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual meeting indicated that business with airlines such as Emirates remains strong. They added that operations are expected to normalise as regional carriers recover. Call for market access Clark reiterated Emirates’ longstanding request for broader market access, particularly in Germany, including the ability to operate flights to Berlin. German authorities have so far declined the request, citing the airline’s existing services to four German cities. Clark emphasised that Emirates has strong economic grounds to support expansion. “We have brought enormous economic value to Germany,” he said, pointing to the airline’s investments in aircraft manufacturing and partnerships with local suppliers. “We have very compelling reasons to be allowed to operate in Berlin.” Fleet strategy and aircraft concerns Clark also addressed fleet expansion plans, stating that Emirates is not currently in a position to order the Airbus A350-1000. He cited concerns over engine performance, noting that the Rolls-Royce engines used on the aircraft do not yet meet Emirates’ durability requirements, particularly under demanding operating conditions such as high temperatures, heavy loads, and dusty environments. “I don’t think we are in a position to adopt the A350-1000 until we see improvements,” he said, highlighting challenges faced during summer operations. Leadership and continuity Clark indicated that he does not plan to retire in the near future and remains focused on guiding the airline through its current phase. He also expressed confidence in Emirates’ leadership team, noting that many members have spent their entire careers with the airline and are well-equipped to continue its growth trajectory. “We have a team that lives and breathes for this airline,” he said, adding that the organisation is well prepared to maintain its strategic direction.
