"Four Sumatran tiger cubs have been born at Taman Safari Indonesia II in East Java, in what the park has hailed as a major milestone for the conservation of one of the world's most endangered big cat species. Footage captured in Pasuruan on Sunday shows a mother Sumatran tiger keeping watch over her four cubs inside a breeding enclosure. The youngsters, who were born in late March, can be seen padding between shaded areas and a water pool while remaining under close supervision. Veterinarian Dr Nanang Tejo Laksono said preparations for the birth began long before the cubs arrived. "We have been preparing for the birth right from the start. This included providing vitamins and special feed for both the male and female, as well as monitoring them from the very first mating to the last," said Dr Nanang Tejo Laksono. "Once the mother became pregnant, we continuously monitored her and prepared a specific birthing enclosure equipped with CCTV to make surveillance easier. Alhamdulillah, they were born naturally," he added. The litter consists of three males and one female, born to a male tiger named Praja and a female named Dini. This is Dini's second litter. She previously gave birth to two cubs in 2021. Park officials said the birth of four cubs is unusual, with Sumatran tigers typically producing litters of around two cubs. Found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra, the Sumatran tiger is critically endangered, with the Safari park noting fewer than 400 remain in the wild. It is also Indonesia's last surviving tiger subspecies following the extinction of the Javan and Balinese tigers. Taman Safari Indonesia II currently cares for 24 Sumatran tigers as part of its conservation programme, with the new arrivals providing a further boost to efforts to safeguard the species' future."
