Mansoor bin Mohammed chairs Dubai Sports Council meeting to advance global sports leadership

Dubai: His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Sports Council, chaired a meeting of the Council’s Board of Directors to review key initiatives, strategic projects, and major sporting events aimed at strengthening Dubai’s position as a global hub for sport. During the meeting, His Highness affirmed that Dubai continues to play a leading role in launching initiatives that contribute to advancing the global sports sector. He highlighted the importance of sport in supporting communities, enhancing quality of life, promoting health and wellbeing, and driving economic and urban development. Sheikh Mansoor commended the efforts of the Ministry of Sports, the UAE National Olympic Committee, and various sports federations for overseeing competitions during the past season. He also praised sports clubs for their contribution to strengthening competitiveness, noting that strong competition enhances athletes’ capabilities across local, continental and international levels. Recognition of sporting achievements His Highness congratulated Dubai Basketball Club on its strong performance in the EuroLeague and qualification for the Adriatic League final. He noted that the club’s rapid progress reflects the success of an investment-based sports model capable of competing with leading European teams. He also congratulated Hatta Club for winning the UAE Division One title and securing promotion to the UAE Pro League, alongside United Club, which achieved promotion for the first time in its history. Palm City 365 Club was also recognised for winning the UAE FA Cup. World Sports Summit The Board reviewed preparations for the second edition of the World Sports Summit, which has emerged as a global platform for advancing the sports sector. Sheikh Mansoor said the summit has achieved significant success in bringing together industry leaders, decision-makers and stakeholders, while strengthening international collaboration across the sector. Club accelerators programme The meeting also reviewed progress on the Club Accelerators Programme, which supports four government-owned clubs—Al Wasl, Al Nasr, Shabab Al Ahli and Hatta—and 13 private clubs. The initiative aims to promote sustainable growth by linking funding to performance indicators and increasing the share of commercial and private revenues to 50 percent of total revenues by 2033. Strategic plan progress The Council reviewed updates from the Strategy Committee on the Dubai Sports Sector Strategic Plan 2033. The report revealed that 74 percent of initiatives scheduled for 2025 and 2026 have entered active implementation, with 17 additional initiatives ready for launch. Efforts to streamline procedures for hosting major international sporting events were also highlighted, supporting Dubai’s economic and tourism sectors. Upcoming major events The Board reviewed a strong calendar of major sporting events scheduled for the second half of 2026, including the World Sports Summit, FIFA Awards, Polo World Cup, Women’s Triathlon World Cup, Volleyball World Tour, Badminton World Cup, DP World Tour Championship, and Emirates Airline Dubai Rugby Sevens. Other events include the Dubai Fitness Challenge, Dubai Marathon, Dubai Muscle Show, Ultra Trail Dubai, and several international competitions across multiple sports disciplines. Strengthening institutional efficiency The meeting concluded with the approval of new Board committees to enhance operational efficiency. These include the Global Events Hosting and Organising Committee, Football Committee, Investment and Projects Committee, and Sports Development Committee. The session underscored Dubai’s continued focus on strengthening its sports ecosystem, advancing strategic initiatives, and reinforcing its position as a global destination for sport and major international events.
