They were burning foreigners' houses at night! - 171 Malawians evacuate amid migrant protests, unrest in South Africa

"A group of 171 Malawians arrived in Blantyre on Tuesday, as they evacuated from South Africa, following xenophobic attacks by locals against migrant workers. Footage shows evacuees arriving and collecting luggage from the bus, undergoing a temperature check, queuing for registration and receiving meals. Chief Secretary to the Government of Malawi and the Secretary to the President and Cabinet Justin Saidi said authorities encourage Malawi residents to repatriate and characterised the situation in South Africa as 'not good'. "These are our people, we need their lives, their support, and their contribution to developing the country. So, we want them to remain here in Malawi," he said. Saidi added the government is sending more busses to transport the evacuees and urged national business to support authorities in further transportation of the fellow citizens. This comes amid South African anti-migrant groups issuing demands for the undocumented foreigners to leave the country, setting June 30 as a deadline. "The situation worsened when they started conducting night operations to burn the houses of foreigners. That's when we fled and sought refuge in a hall, where we stayed for a week and a half," said Victoria Tembo, an evacuated Malawian. In a national address on Sunday aimed at calming tensions, President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled new measures to curb illegal migration. He also cautioned against vigilante action, stating that “there is no space for xenophobia, racism, sexism, Afrophobia, or any other forms of intolerance” in South Africa. Meanwhile, more than 3,000 Malawians are expected to be evacuated by June 30. Ghana, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe have also arranged repatriation flights and transport after raising concerns over xenophobia in South Africa."
