Members of Senate majority bloc donate salary for quake relief

MEMBERS of the Senate majority bloc led by Senate President Pro Tempore Sherwin Gatchalian have agreed to donate one month salary to support relief and recovery efforts for communities affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Mindanao. In a joint statement issued Tuesday, the senators expressed solidarity with families displaced and affected by the powerful quake, which caused widespread damage and disrupted communities across several areas. “The people of Mindanao are facing the difficult tasks of rescue, relief, rebuilding, and recovery,” the senators said, emphasizing the need for immediate assistance. The lawmakers said their contribution would help address urgent needs such as food, clean water, medicines, temporary shelter, and other essential services identified by local governments and humanitarian organizations. They called on members of the Senate minority to join the initiative, stressing that disaster response should transcend political affiliations. “Regardless of political affiliations, we are all senators of the Filipino people,” the group said. “This is an opportunity to unite and demonstrate concern for our fellow Filipinos during a time of crisis.” Meanwhile, the offices of Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano and Sen. Pia Cayetano deployed teams to Davao City and General Santos City to assess conditions and provide immediate assistance to affected residents.
