"The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, announced this Tuesday the implementation of the decree for the suspension of in-person work in public and private offices for the upcoming June 11, the day of the inauguration of the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Mexico City, with the aim of reducing vehicular congestion. The decree, published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), orders the Federal Public Administration agencies in Mexico City to implement remote work at the opening of the tournament, Sheinbaum reported in her morning conference. "Luisa Maria [Alcalde, legal advisor to the Presidency] is going to present a decree that was published today in the Official Gazette of the Federation to suspend work on the 11th in all public and private offices," the president stated. She explained that the purpose is "to avoid traffic and problems on the day of the World Cup." However, she clarified that this measure does not imply a mandatory suspension for the entire private sector. "It is not an obligation," she emphasized. According to Sheinbaum, activities related to industrial production, manufacturing, and essential services will continue to operate normally. "Stores, restaurants, diners, etc., will continue to operate. They have no problems," she added. While this measure is a direct instruction for federal government workers in Mexico City, activities related to health services, national security, transportation, social programs, and events linked to the organization of the World Cup are excluded. In the educational field, classes were also suspended for June 11 at the preschool, primary, secondary, upper secondary, and higher levels dependent on Public Education in the capital. With these adjustments, Mexico City is preparing the final details to celebrate the inauguration of the 2026 World Cup. The other two Mexican venues that will host tournament matches are Guadalajara and Monterrey."
