"Clashes escalated at the latest protests against the US Ebola quarantine facility in Nanyuki on Tuesday, with one man seen motionless and bleeding on the ground. Footage also shows tear gas being fired from motorcycle riders into the crowd, as authorities attempted to disperse the angry demonstrators. According to local reports, at least one person had died. Plans for a US-backed Ebola isolation facility at Laikipia Air Base in Nanyuki sparked a huge public backlash after Kenya approved a 50-bed quarantine unit. Funded with approximately KSh 1.68 billion (USD 13 million) in US aid following outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda, the facility was intended to isolate exposed American personnel operating across Africa - while critics claimed the country, which does not have an Ebola outbreak, was being put at risk, and being used as a 'dumping ground'. Earlier on June 1, at least two protesters were shot dead, and 31 were arrested amid clashes as a US military transport aircraft arrived. The High Court later ordered the government to disclose all agreements related to the project. Those arrested were released on bail and vowed further demonstrations unless the plan is scrapped. President William Ruto defended the facility, saying the agreement was 'mutually beneficial' in terms of broader health security."
