"Teachers protested in Barcelona on Tuesday during Pope Leo XIV's visit to demand better working conditions and greater investment in public education. Demonstrators, some of them wearing papal hats, marched through the city while chanting slogans and carrying signs bearing slogans such as 'Neither miracles nor charity — labour rights and quality public services' and 'We demand facts, not miracles'. “We are not able to do our work with dignity, nor do children have a decent environment in which to grow, learn and develop,” one teacher said. “He is one of the figures with the greatest influence in society,” the teacher said. “He may be one of the people most capable of telling leaders what we really need,” another protester added. The protest comes as Pope Leo visited Spain on a seven-day apostolic trip covering Madrid, Barcelona, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, with a programme including more than 30 official events. The Vatican visit is the Pope’s fourth apostolic journey and the first papal visit to Spain since Benedict XVI travelled to the country in 2011."
