Major British supermarket opens four new sites and refurbishing six more in latest expansion move

Marks and Spencer (M&S) has opened two new London supermarkets as part of a wider expansion programme across the capital. The retailer launched a new 8,900-square-foot food hall in Tooting Broadway on May 27 before opening a second location on Tottenham Court Road on Tuesday. The openings form part of a broader plan to introduce 10 new and improved London stores during 2026 alongside major refurbishments at six existing branches. M&S has continued to expand its presence across the capital following plans announced last year to open 200 new stores. TRENDING Stories Videos Your Say The new Tooting Broadway food hall is located on Mitcham Road and marks the retailer’s return to the area after an absence of 18 years. Meanwhile, the new Tottenham Court Road branch has relocated from number 55 to 15-17 Tottenham Court Road, placing it closer to the Tube station. The retailer said the new central London location is 45 per cent larger than the previous store. The branch also includes an in-store bakery and coffee counter as part of the upgraded shopping experience. Both new locations operate as food halls and form part of M&S’s growing convenience grocery network across London. Two further London stores are expected to open later this year. A new branch at Bell Green Retail Park in Sydenham is scheduled to open in September, while a store at The Elephant Development in Elephant and Castle is expected to launch during autumn or winter. Alongside the expansion programme, M&S is also carrying out major refurbishments at six existing London stores. Refurbishment works at the Richmond branch are expected to conclude later in autumn or winter. M&S announced plans last year to open 200 new stores across London as part of a wider investment strategy expected to create 450 jobs. Sacha Berendji, operations director at Marks and Spencer, said: "London has always been a special place for M&S, growing from penny bazaars in the early 20th century into fresh Foodhalls like the one in Brixton we reopened last year. "Our pipeline of stores demonstrates our continued investment in London, and we will continue to bring the very best of M&S to customers from Brixton to Barnet for years to come." An M&S spokesman said the retailer was "continuing to invest heavily" in its store estate, with 15 new locations already opened across the UK this year. Our Standards: The GB News Editorial Charter
