"Bulgarian Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said the war in Ukraine cannot be resolved on the battlefield and urged a renewed focus on negotiations, arguing that continued fighting is resulting only in further loss of life. Speaking at a press conference in Sofia, Stoyanov described the conflict as a war of attrition. “The war in Ukraine will not be resolved on the battlefield,” he said. “What we are witnessing is a war of positions, and no matter how much weaponry is supplied, the only result is the loss of human lives.” The minister said it was time for the parties involved in the conflict to pursue a political solution. “It is time to sit down at the negotiating table. It is time to seek a just peace,” he said. “Such a just peace must be determined by the two parties involved in the conflict.” Stoyanov acknowledged the importance of the European Union's role throughout the war but suggested the bloc would face difficulties acting as a mediator because of its support for Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The Bulgarian minister also indicated that Sofia does not currently plan to provide additional military equipment to Kiev. “Ukraine needs more people, not more weapons,” Stoyanov said. “It already has a sufficient amount of military equipment from our allies.” Stoyanov's comments came after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held talks in London with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The leaders met at Downing Street to discuss continued military support for Ukraine, European security and coordination."
