More than just hints of H and O too! - First water sommelier in Latin America making a splash in Argentina

"Analia Videla, an Argentine expert with over two decades of experience in the wine industry, has become Latin America's first certified water sommelier. Through her unique role, Videla is helping to actively challenge the belief that all water tastes the same. Footage captured in Mendoza on Tuesday shows Videla sampling water varieties while recording detailed tasting notes. She explains that distinct geological origins and specific mineral compositions create vast differences between varieties. "It is a rather mistaken concept that water is tasteless, odourless, and colourless. First, because it will depend on the origin. Water has terroir like wine. It has terroir because it comes from certain areas that have different geographical compositions," she explained. Her fascination with the discipline began during her tenure as an international wine judge, when she noticed that different water profiles directly altered the palate of the wine and other beverages being evaluated. "I started to pay more attention to the waters we chose for competitions because I noticed a big difference between those with a high mineral content and those that were more neutral," she stated. This curiosity drove her to pursue training in Germany, where she found herself the sole Latin American representative. "The limitation was that [the classes] were in German and I speak English and French. I said: well, the opportunity will come. And they contacted me last year to join the training group as the only one in Latin America," she recalled. Videla admits that pioneering this niche profession in her region has brought a mix of skepticism and respect. "People start to laugh a little, people who are ignorant of the subject. On the other hand, all professionals in the wine and beverage industry know how difficult it is to identify the attributes of other beverages," she pointed out. Beyond refining the consumer palate, she stressed that understanding water profiles is vital for personal wellness. Essential minerals like calcium support bone density, while magnesium aids cardiovascular health and mental focus. "It is important for health and also to break the paradigm that water not only hydrates but also nourishes," she assured. Ultimately, the Argentine expert aims to dismantle prejudices and prove that water can be appreciated with the same depth as a fine vintage wine."
