A new study by an international team of geoscientists suggests that volcanic activity on Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula is being driven primarily by the long-term accumulation of stress along the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, rather than by earthquake swarms marking the path of magma forcing its way through the Earth’s crust.
