A leisure centre on Auckland’s North Shore has been forced to close its pool ahead of schedule after a nighttime act of vandalism left the water contaminated with glass. Last Friday, a glass fire exit door at the Glenfield Pool and Leisure Centre was smashed from the outside at about 9.30pm, sending shards into the aquatics centre. Staff at the facility called police, who arrested one person at the scene. General Manager Pools and Leisure Arvid Ditchburn told the Herald the vandalism had contaminated the swimming pool with glass. There were no swimmers in the pool at the time of the incident and the pool is now being drained to allow the glass to be removed. “The safety of our customers and staff is our top priority, and we are thankful that no one was injured in this incident,” Ditchburn said. As a result, the aquatics centre’s planned maintenance shutdown has been brought forward. The facility had already been scheduled to close for maintenance on June 10, with a planned reopening date of June 25. In a post on Facebook, the leisure centre announced the closure had been brought forward. “This will allow us to complete the required work and planned maintenance during one closure period, minimising future disruption for our members.” Passholders have been told they can use their memberships at other Auckland pools during the closure. “We appreciate your patience and understanding while the work is carried out.” It said it looked forward to welcoming people back on Thursday, June 25.
