The state association of Vienna's compulsory school parent associations called on Wednesday for the summer holidays to be shortened from the current nine weeks to six weeks. "Overlong holidays" lead to knowledge deficits, particularly in mathematics and spelling, and also create childcare problems for parents. "Just because something has always been this way doesn't mean it's good and has to stay that way," demanded chairman Georg Brockmeyer, calling for a serious, fact-oriented discussion.
