'FIFA go home!' - Activists kick off against World Cup and evictions as Azteca Stadium reopens

"Students from the National School of Anthropology and History (ENAH), alongside anti-gentrification groups, staged a protest on Periferico Sur on Saturday, criticising the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup and urban development policies in Mexico City. Footage shows demonstrators organising a symbolic football match outside the ENAH campus, while blocking central lanes of the avenue. Protesters held signs reading “Let us play, or are you going to repress us?” and “Global event, local eviction.” Police were deployed to manage traffic disruption, with helicopters seen monitoring the protest from above. Demonstrators said they were calling for improved access to water and housing, and accused authorities of enabling displacement linked to World Cup-related development. They claimed multiple properties had been repurposed or expanded beyond regulations to cater to tourism. “FIFA is a business model that strips territories wherever it goes. Mexico is no exception. We see the government fully willing to provide FIFA with all the facilities,” one protester said. “The World Cup is being used as a whitewashing of wars, genocides and everything the United States is causing right now,” added Federico Soto, a second protester. The demonstration took place hours before the reopening of Azteca Stadium, where Mexico and Portugal played out a draw in a friendly match as part of preparations for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada."
