'Govt put us in first line of war!' - Hundreds rally in Athens demanding end to Iran hostilities, urge Greece to stay out of conflict

"Hundreds took to the streets of Athens on Saturday to protest the US-Israeli war against Iran, urging the Greek authorities to stay out of the ongoing fighting in the Middle East. Footage shows protesters gathering at Syntagma Square with banners to express solidarity with the Axis of Resistance, before marching to the US embassy. "We demonstrate today against the war, racisms, Islamophobia, and above all - the government of Mitsotakis that has put the country in the first line of the war next to Israel and the US that [are] bombing Iran," explained an union leader. Protesters also marched past the European Union building before gathering outside the US embassy, where they burned an American flag, lit flares, and chanted in support of people in Iran and Gaza. "Our struggle reflects a universal truth that democracy cannot survive where power behaves like royalty, and where simple people must remain silent. From Athens to Minneapolis, the message is the same: the governments must be accountable to the people," said an activist. According to media reports, the rally was backed by multiple political and civil groups, as well as labour unions and student associations. Tensions have escalated across the Middle East since the United States and Israel launched a joint military operation against Iran on February 28, amid diplomatic talks aimed at 'curbing Iran's nuclear and missile programmes'. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes on Israeli and US assets in the region, accompanied by reports of explosions in several Gulf countries. Iran later confirmed the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, with his son Mojtaba Khamenei named as his successor. The conflict spilt over into Lebanon as Hezbollah intervened 'in revenge' for the killing of the Iranian Supreme Leader. Shipping routes, including the Strait of Hormuz, were disrupted following its closure."
