Caloocan extends free legal aid to 29 women PDLs

TWENTY-NINE women who are currently detained at the custodial facility of the Caloocan Police became the beneficiaries of the free legal services from the city’s legal department, Mayor Dave Gonzalo Malapitan said on Sunday. Malapitan told The Manila Times via Viber that the initiative was part of the local government's activities to mark International Women’s Month. He said the city government provided legal advice and assistance to the women PDLs in connection with the criminal cases filed against them in various trial courts in the city. The city chief executive said the project, led by the city's Legal Department and Social Welfare and Development Office, is a regular undertaking to make services more accessible even to the most vulnerable sectors of the community. Also, the mayor said that his administration remains committed to upholding justice and the rule of law, adding that, “the rights of people, especially those under preventive custody, must be given the highest level of respect.” He further said the local government is maximizing its resources to address crime incidents, which have been declining since early last year due to enhanced police visibility and law enforcers' prompt response to emergencies.
