'I will return as president!' - Flavio Bolsonaro pitches rare earth alliance at CPAC, slams 'lawfare' against his father and Trump

"Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro - former President Jair Bolsonaro's son - framed his 2026 presidential candidacy as a strategic lifeline for the United States during his CPAC speech in Grapevine, Texas, on Saturday. Bolsonaro pledged to return to CPAC next year as president, declaring that under his leadership Brazil would position itself as a strategic alternative to US reliance on China for critical minerals. "America needs secure supply chains for critical materials, [...] and Brazil needs three things; help fighting transnational drug cartels, investments and technology. There is no nation in the world that can help us with this better than the United States - and we are aligned," the senator said. "Next year, when I return to this stage as president of Brazil, we won't just be celebrating another election victory. We will be celebrating the birth of the strongest conservative alliance in Western Hemisphere history. The beginning of a new era where freedom wins," he declared. Bolsonaro also defended his father, drawing a direct parallel between his 27-year prison sentence - which he described as a result of a 'lawfare' - to the legal challenges faced by US President Donald Trump. "The formal charge is similar to what President Donald Trump faced in the insurrection," he asserted. "The greatest political leader in my country is in prison for defending our conservative values without fear and opposing the system with everything he had." Bolsonaro alleged that USAID money and 'massive interference' from the Biden administration were responsible for putting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva back in power. He also accused the incumbent leader of corruption, claiming the current administration is leading the country into a 'devastating economic crisis' while allowing the 'huge expansion of narco-terrorist cartels.' "Lula and his party are openly anti-American. He speaks publicly about undermining the dollar as the global currency. He has aligned Brazil with China on a massive scale. He has opposite American interests on every single item of foreign policy," Bolsonaro said. "Most shocking of all, he has used heavy lobbying with 13 US advisors to prevent Brazil's two largest drug cartels from being classified as terrorist organisations," he added. Seven months ahead of the elections, Flavio Bolsonaro is positioning himself as a competitive option against President Lula da Silva, who is currently trying to contain the economic impact of rising oil prices amid the war between the United States and Iran."
