"Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Mao Ning on Monday 'strongly condemned' the killing of an Indonesian UNIFIL peacekeeper in southern Lebanon, calling the incident 'absolutely unacceptable' during a press briefing in Beijing. "China strongly condemns the attack on UNIFIL, expresses its condolences to the victims, and extends its sympathies to the injured," Mao said. "Any deliberate attack on United Nations peacekeepers constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian law." "China urges the parties concerned to de-escalate the situation and take concrete measures to ensure the safety of United Nations peacekeepers," she added. The incident occurred on Sunday when a projectile struck a position occupied by Indonesian troops. One peacekeeper was killed. Three others were injured, including one in critical condition. UNIFIL said the origin of the projectile remains unknown. Indonesia's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, calling it 'unacceptable' and a violation of international law. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that attacks on peacekeepers 'may amount to war crimes'. Israel’s military said it is reviewing the incident, while the IDF confirmed its forces had been operating nearby overnight, targeting Hezbollah fighters allegedly preparing mortar attacks. It follows a similar incident earlier in March in which Ghanaian UN troops were wounded by Israeli tank fire."
