MANILA, Philippines — Around 83,000 passengers benefited from the free jeepney rides launched by the Manila City government on its first day of operations. In a statement released Monday, the city government reported that a total of 82,958 passengers were served by 1,027 participating jeepneys under the initiative. Manila Mayor Isko Moreno earlier said the program aims to ease the impact of rising fuel costs on commuters. Under the scheme, the city government will rent more than 1,000 active jeepneys, with drivers earning about P3,000 per day. The initiative will run for five days, starting Monday, March 30 and 31, before pausing for Holy Week.
